Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 46 - Verse 17

46:17
But if he give a gift of his inheritance to one of his servants, then it shall be his to the year of liberty; after it shall return to the prince: but his inheritance shall be his sons' for them.

Meaning

In this verse, the concept of inheritance and gift giving is explored within the context of servanthood. The verse outlines the conditions under which a servant may receive a gift of inheritance from his master. According to the verse, if a master chooses to give a gift of his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant will possess the gift until the year of liberty. The year of liberty refers to the year of jubilee, a special year in the Hebrew calendar when debts were forgiven, slaves were set free, and land that had been sold was returned to its original owners. After the year of liberty, the gift given to the servant will return to the master, signifying that the servant's possession was temporary. Meanwhile, the master's inheritance will ultimately be passed down to his sons, ensuring that his family line continues to benefit from his wealth and possessions. This verse emphasizes the importance of familial inheritance and the temporary nature of gifts given to servants within the bounds of the master-servant relationship.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Ezekiel 46:17 focuses on the idea of stewardship and responsibility over one's possessions. In this context, the prince is seen as the owner of the inheritance, which represents God's blessings and resources given to His people. When the prince gives a gift of his inheritance to a servant, it is a demonstration of trust and responsibility. The year of liberty mentioned in the verse speaks to the idea of redemption and restoration. It signifies a time when debts are forgiven, slaves are set free, and land is returned to its original owner. This reflects the biblical theme of justice and mercy, where the land ultimately belongs to God and His people are called to be good stewards of His gifts. The mention of the prince's sons receiving his inheritance emphasizes the importance of passing on blessings and responsibilities from one generation to the next, highlighting the concept of legacy and continuity in God's plan for His people.

American Standard Version
