Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 36 - Verse 23

36:23
And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

Meaning

This verse from Ezekiel 36:23 emphasizes the importance of sanctifying the name of the Lord among the nations. The term "sanctify" means to set apart, make holy, or consecrate something. In this context, God is stating that He will uphold the holiness of His name, which had been profaned by the actions of the Israelites among the nations. By sanctifying His name, God is asserting His authority and sovereignty over all creation. The verse also highlights the idea that the nations will come to know and acknowledge the power and presence of the Lord through the sanctification that He will display through the people of Israel. This serves as a reminder that our actions as believers reflect on the reputation of God and have the potential to either sanctify or profane His name in the eyes of others. As God sanctifies Himself through His people, the nations will witness His glory and come to a deeper understanding of His majesty and lordship.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the emphasis is on the sanctification of God's name. The term "sanctify" means to make holy or set apart for a sacred purpose. Here, God declares that He will sanctify His great name which had been profaned among the heathen. This indicates that God's reputation among the gentile nations had been tarnished by the actions of His chosen people. By sanctifying His name, God is asserting His righteousness and power in the eyes of the nations. The verse also highlights the idea that God's people play a role in either glorifying or profaning His name through their actions. When God is sanctified in the sight of His people, it serves as a testimony to the heathen of His greatness and authority. This verse reminds believers of the importance of living in a way that honors God's name and brings glory to Him in the world.
