Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 32 - Verse 31

32:31
Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.

Meaning

When interpreting the verse "Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD," it is important to understand the context in which it is situated. This verse comes from the book of Ezekiel in the Bible, specifically in a section where the prophet Ezekiel is delivering a message from God to the nation of Egypt. In this particular verse, God is declaring that Pharaoh and his entire army will be slain by the sword. The phrase "shall see them, and shall be comforted" may seem perplexing at first, but in this context, it indicates that Pharaoh, in his arrogance and pride, believed his army to be invincible. However, when God brings judgment upon him and his army, Pharaoh will come to see the true power and authority of God. Despite the destruction that will come upon Pharaoh and his multitude, God is ultimately in control and will bring about justice in accordance with his divine will.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Ezekiel 32:31, the theological interpretation relates to Pharaoh's reaction upon seeing the destruction of his army. Instead of mourning or regretting his actions, Pharaoh finds comfort in the fact that his entire army has been slain. This highlights Pharaoh's pride and arrogance, as he takes solace in the fact that his army now joins him in death. The phrase "saith the Lord GOD" emphasizes the divine judgment upon Pharaoh and his army for their wickedness and oppression of the Israelites. The word study of "comforted" in this context reveals a sense of satisfaction or relief at the sight of their demise, rather than sorrow. This verse serves as a cautionary reminder of the consequences of pride and the inevitable judgment of God upon those who oppress His people.
