Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 28 - Verse 24

28:24
And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

Meaning

In this verse from the Book of Ezekiel, God is promising the house of Israel that they will no longer face the trials and tribulations brought upon them by their enemies. The imagery of a pricking brier and a grieving thorn symbolizes the pain and suffering that the Israelites have endured at the hands of those who despised them. However, with God's intervention, these obstacles will be removed, and the Israelites will finally be at peace. This verse serves as a reminder of God's protection and love for his people, reassuring them that he is always watching over them and will not allow them to suffer indefinitely. Through these words, the Israelites are called to remember the power and sovereignty of the Lord God, who will ultimately bring about their deliverance and vindication.

Theological Overview

In the verse, the terms "pricking brier" and "grieving thorn" are symbolic of the pain and trouble that the people of Israel have experienced in the past due to their disobedience and the surrounding nations that looked down on them. The removal of these thorns and briers signifies a time of peace and restoration that God promises to bring to His people. This verse reveals God's care and protection for Israel, assuring them that He will remove all sources of harm and suffering from their midst. The phrase "they shall know that I am the Lord GOD" speaks to the ultimate purpose of these actions: to make His presence and power known to His people, that they may recognize and acknowledge Him as their true God. This verse is not just a promise of physical relief but also a spiritual assurance of God's sovereignty and faithfulness.

American Standard Version
