Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 26 - Verse 19

26:19
For thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee;

Meaning

In this verse, the prophet Ezekiel is delivering a message from the Lord GOD to the people of a desolate city. The imagery of a desolate city being overtaken by deep waters symbolizes the impending destruction and judgment that will come upon the city due to its sins and disobedience. The Lord is warning the people that their city will become like other uninhabited cities, completely devoid of life and prosperity. The mention of great waters covering the city emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the judgment that will befall them. It serves as a powerful warning to the people to repent and turn back to God before it is too late. This verse conveys the severity of God's judgment on those who turn away from Him, but also serves as a call to repentance and restoration for those who heed the warning.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse can be seen as a warning from God to a city or nation that has strayed from His ways. The imagery of becoming a desolate city and being covered by deep waters serves as a metaphor for the consequences of turning away from God and His commandments. In this context, the desolation of the city represents the spiritual barrenness that comes from forsaking God, while the waters symbolize the overwhelming flood of judgment that will come as a result. This verse can be seen as a reminder of the importance of staying faithful to God and the dangers of straying from His path. It serves as a call to repentance and a plea for obedience to God's will in order to avoid the fate of becoming like the uninhabited cities mentioned in the passage.
