Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 26 - Verse 10

26:10
By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Nahum, the prophet delivers a warning to the city of Nineveh about the consequences of their arrogance and pride. The mention of the abundance of horses symbolizes the military strength and power of the enemy that will soon invade the city. The image of their dust covering the city signifies the overwhelming force that will come upon them, causing fear and destruction. The shaking walls at the noise of the horsemen, wheels, and chariots represent the imminent attack that will bring devastation and chaos to the once proud city. The comparison to a breached city highlights the vulnerability and impending downfall of Nineveh due to their arrogance and wickedness. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of humility and repentance.

Theological Overview

The verse provides a vivid picture of the power and destruction that can come from relying on earthly strength and resources rather than trusting in God. The mention of the abundance of horses symbolizes pride, self-reliance, and trust in one's own ability rather than in the Lord. The dust covering thee represents the consequences of relying on worldly power instead of seeking the protection and guidance of God. The shaking walls and noise of the horsemen, wheels, and chariots indicate the imminent downfall and destruction that will come upon those who place their trust in material things rather than in the Almighty. The imagery of entering into gates as one would a breached city suggests an invasion and ultimate defeat resulting from one's own arrogance and refusal to humble oneself before God.

American Standard Version

By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wagons, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.
