Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 23 - Verse 7

23:7
Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament describes a metaphorical relationship between the people of Israel and the nations around them, specifically Assyria. The "whoredoms" mentioned here symbolize the unfaithfulness of Israel to their covenant with God, as they turned to other nations and their idols for protection and blessings instead of relying on God alone. By seeking alliances with Assyria and embracing their idols, the people of Israel defiled themselves spiritually and morally. The verse serves as a warning against idolatry and the consequences of turning away from God's commandments. It emphasizes the importance of staying true to one's faith and not being swayed by the temptations of the world. Through this verse, readers are reminded of the importance of loyalty and devotion to God above all else.

Theological Overview

This imagery serves to emphasize the severity of Israel's sin and its betrayal of God's covenant. The word "whoredoms" in the verse suggests not just physical unfaithfulness, but spiritual infidelity as well, highlighting the importance of loyalty and devotion in the relationship between God and His people. The word "idols" mentioned in the verse signifies the false gods and practices that Israel had adopted, leading them away from the one true God. Through this passage, readers are reminded of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of remaining steadfast in faith.
