Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 23 - Verse 27

23:27
Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more.

Meaning

This verse comes from the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament and is a symbolic representation of God's promise to His people to cleanse them of their idolatry and sinful ways. The reference to Egypt in this verse serves as a metaphor for the bondage and slavery that the Israelites experienced in Egypt before they were led to freedom by Moses. By saying that He will make their lewdness and whoredom cease from them, God is promising to cleanse His people of their sins and their tendency to turn away from Him in pursuit of false gods and worldly desires. The imagery of not lifting up their eyes to Egypt or remembering it anymore signifies that God will help His people break free from their past sins and temptations, allowing them to focus solely on Him and His commandments. This verse serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness, mercy, and desire for His people to turn back to Him with repentant hearts.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Ezekiel 23:27, the word "lewdness" refers to immoral or indecent behavior, while "whoredom" symbolizes idolatry or spiritual unfaithfulness. By stating that the people will no longer lift up their eyes to these idols or remember Egypt, God is promising a complete transformation and deliverance from sinful behavior. This verse highlights God's desire for His people to turn away from their sinful ways and devote themselves entirely to Him, trusting in His power to cleanse and purify them from all forms of unfaithfulness. Through this promise, God is offering forgiveness, redemption, and a fresh start for those who choose to turn back to Him and abandon their sinful past.
