Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 16 - Verse 55

16:55
When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Ezekiel, the prophet conveys a message from God to the people of Jerusalem. The verse speaks of the restoration of Sodom, Samaria, and Jerusalem. Sodom and Samaria, two cities known for their wickedness and idolatry, are being used as examples of cities that will be restored by God's grace. The mention of Sodom and Samaria returning to their former estate before Jerusalem and her daughters highlights the idea of redemption and restoration. God is reminding the people of Jerusalem that even the most sinful and depraved cities can be redeemed and restored if they turn back to Him. It serves as a message of hope and encouragement for the people of Jerusalem, offering them the promise of restoration if they repent and return to their former estate of righteousness and obedience to God.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse is that it serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the possibility of restoration through repentance. The reference to Sodom and Samaria, two cities known for their disobedience and idolatry in the Old Testament, emphasizes the severity of sin and the destruction it can bring. However, the mention of their potential return to their former estate suggests the opportunity for redemption and restoration. This serves as a warning to the hearers of the verse that they too must turn from their wicked ways and seek forgiveness in order to be restored to their former glory. The use of the analogy of sisters also highlights the interconnectedness of the communities and the collective responsibility to uphold righteousness. Overall, this verse conveys the themes of repentance, restoration, and the mercy of God in the face of human rebellion.
