Book of Exodus - Chapter 8 - Verse 8

8:8
Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Entreat the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD.

Meaning

In this verse, Pharaoh is experiencing the consequences of his refusal to let the Israelites go. The land of Egypt is plagued by frogs, and Pharaoh is desperate to get rid of them. He calls on Moses and Aaron to entreat the Lord on his behalf, promising to let the Israelites go if the frogs are taken away. This demonstrates Pharaoh's recognition of the power of the Lord, despite his previous stubbornness. By asking Moses and Aaron to intercede on his behalf, Pharaoh acknowledges that only God has the ability to remove the frogs and bring relief to the people of Egypt. This verse highlights the theme of repentance and redemption, showing how even the most hardened hearts can be softened in the face of God's power and judgment.

Theological Overview

Pharaoh's request to Moses and Aaron to entreat the LORD to remove the frogs from Egypt sheds light on the desperate situation faced by the Egyptian ruler. Throughout the Bible, frogs are often seen as symbols of impurity and uncleanness. In this context, they represent the oppression and judgment brought upon Egypt due to Pharaoh's refusal to let the Israelites go. By asking Moses and Aaron to intercede on his behalf, Pharaoh is acknowledging the power and authority of the LORD, yet his request is driven more by a desire to rid himself of the immediate consequences of his actions rather than genuine repentance. This passage highlights the importance of humility and sincerity in seeking God's mercy and forgiveness, as well as the consequences of unbelief and resistance to His will.
