Book of Exodus - Chapter 8 - Verse 19

8:19
Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

Meaning

In this particular verse from the Book of Exodus, we see Pharaoh's reaction to the miracles performed by Moses and Aaron in front of him. The magicians in Pharaoh's court recognize that the plagues brought upon Egypt are not just acts of magic, but are the works of a divine power. They acknowledge that what they are witnessing is beyond their own abilities and must be the handiwork of a higher being. Despite this revelation, Pharaoh's heart remains hardened, and he refuses to listen to the advice from his own advisors. This serves as a reminder of the consequences of pride and stubbornness, as Pharaoh's refusal to heed the warning ultimately leads to further devastation for Egypt. It also showcases the power and sovereignty of God, as even in the face of undeniable miracles, Pharaoh's heart remains closed off to the truth.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the magicians of Pharaoh acknowledge the power of God when they tell him, "This is the finger of God." This phrase is a significant theological interpretation as it highlights the supernatural nature of the miracles performed by Moses and Aaron. It indicates that even the magicians, skilled in their own magic arts, recognize that the plagues are beyond their control and are the work of a higher power. Interestingly, the phrase "finger of God" is only used in this verse in the Bible, and it emphasizes the direct intervention of God in the events taking place in Egypt. Additionally, the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, despite the warning from his own magicians, fulfills the prophecy of the LORD, showing the divine plan at work. This verse reminds readers of the sovereignty and power of God over all earthly authorities and events, as well as the importance of recognizing and heeding His signs.
