Book of Exodus - Chapter 7 - Verse 5

7:5
And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.

Meaning

In this verse, God is promising to show His power to the Egyptians by delivering the children of Israel from their captivity. By stretching forth His hand and bringing the Israelites out from among them, He will demonstrate His authority and sovereignty over all nations, including Egypt. The Egyptians, who worshipped many gods, would come to know that the Lord, the one true God, was behind the miraculous deliverance of the Israelites. This event would serve as a powerful demonstration of God's power and faithfulness to His chosen people, as well as a lesson for the Egyptians about the existence and supremacy of the God of Israel. Through this act of liberation, God would not only fulfill His promise to deliver the Israelites but also reveal His glory and might to the nations who witnessed His amazing deeds.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Exodus 7:5 is that it showcases the sovereignty of God over all nations. In this context, the Lord is speaking to Moses about the impending plagues upon Egypt in order to display His power and glory. By bringing the Israelites out of Egypt, God demonstrates His authority and supremacy over the false gods of the Egyptian pantheon, showing that He alone is the one true God. This serves as a reminder to both the Israelites and the Egyptians that the Lord is the ultimate ruler and that His will shall prevail. The word study of "stretch forth mine hand" emphasizes God's direct and mighty intervention in the affairs of humanity. It signifies a divine act of power and authority, with God's hand representing His strength and ability to accomplish His purposes. Through this act, the Egyptians come to know that God is the true Lord, the one who wields unmatched power and brings about His plans as He sees fit.
