Book of Exodus - Chapter 7 - Verse 22

7:22
And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Exodus, we see the demonstration of the power of God and the contrast between His authority and the limited power of human beings. The magicians of Egypt were able to replicate some of the miracles that Moses and Aaron performed through their enchantments, showing a degree of power and skill. However, despite their abilities, they were not able to match the true power of God. Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, refusing to acknowledge the authority of the Lord. This serves as a reminder that human efforts and earthly powers are no match for the ultimate power and sovereignty of God. Despite the signs and wonders performed before Pharaoh, his stubbornness and refusal to listen were in line with what the Lord had foretold. The verse illustrates the recurring theme throughout the Bible of the consequences of pride, disobedience, and the futile attempts of humans to challenge the divine. It emphasizes the need for humility, obedience, and acknowledging the ultimate authority of God.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the power struggle between the magicians of Egypt and Moses. The magicians were able to replicate some of the miraculous signs that God performed through Moses; however, their abilities were limited to mere illusions created through their enchantments. Despite witnessing this display of power, Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, and he refused to listen to their warnings. This is in line with the theological concept of God's sovereignty and the hardening of hearts, demonstrating that even when presented with evidence of God's power, individuals may choose to resist His will. The verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of pride and stubbornness, as Pharaoh's refusal to heed the warnings ultimately led to severe consequences for Egypt.

American Standard Version

And the magicians of Egypt did in like manner with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as Jehovah had spoken.
