Book of Exodus - Chapter 5 - Verse 9

5:9
Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

Meaning

In this verse, the speaker is calling for an increase in the workload of the workers so that they are fully occupied with their labor and do not have time to pay attention to empty or meaningless words. The emphasis here is on the importance of hard work and dedication to one's responsibilities. By keeping the workers busy and focused on their tasks, the speaker is highlighting the value of diligence and staying productive. The phrase "let them not regard vain words" stresses the need to avoid wasting time on idle chatter or distractions that do not contribute to the completion of tasks at hand. This verse serves as a reminder of the benefits of staying focused and dedicated to one's work, as well as the importance of avoiding distractions that could hinder productivity.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Exodus 5:9 is that it reveals the oppressive nature of Pharaoh's rule over the Israelites. By commanding that more work be imposed on the men and instructing them to not pay attention to empty words, Pharaoh is increasing the burden on the already oppressed Israelite slaves. This can be seen as a display of his cruelty and desire to maintain control over the population through harsh treatment and labor exploitation. The word "vain" in the phrase "vain words" can also be interpreted as meaningless or deceitful, indicating that Pharaoh wanted the Israelites to focus solely on their work and not be distracted or influenced by anything contrary to his authority. Through a theological lens, this verse highlights the theme of unjust leadership and the struggle of the Israelites to maintain their faith and identity in the face of oppressive forces.

American Standard Version
