Book of Exodus - Chapter 5 - Verse 5

5:5
And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

Meaning

In this verse, Pharaoh is expressing his concern about the Israelites becoming too numerous and powerful. He observes that the people of the land are multiplying, and yet the Israelites are being given rest from their labor. Pharaoh's fear is rooted in the belief that a large population of Israelites could pose a threat to his rule and the stability of Egypt. By making them rest from their burdens, Pharaoh is worried that the Israelites will have more time to grow in number and strength, leading to a potential uprising or rebellion.

This verse highlights the oppressive nature of Pharaoh's rule over the Israelites, as he sees them primarily as a labor force to be controlled and managed. His reaction to their increasing numbers reveals his insecurity and desire to exert even more control over them. The verse sets the stage for the harsher measures Pharaoh will later take to suppress the Israelites, including imposing heavier workloads and eventually ordering the killing of Hebrew male infants.
