Book of Exodus - Chapter 5 - Verse 14

5:14
And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

Meaning

After the Israelites were instructed by Pharaoh's taskmasters to produce bricks, their own officers were held responsible when the required quota was not met. The officers were beaten and questioned for failing to fulfill their task in making bricks as they had done in the past. This verse demonstrates the harsh treatment and heavy burden placed on the Israelites by their Egyptian captors. It also highlights the cruel and oppressive nature of the Pharaoh's rule, where even the Israelite officers were not spared from punishment if the demands were not met. The verse serves as a reminder of the difficult conditions and constant pressure faced by the children of Israel during their enslavement in Egypt. Despite their efforts to meet the demands placed upon them, they were still subjected to violence and reprimand.
