Book of Exodus - Chapter 35 - Verse 30

35:30
And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah;

Meaning

When Moses spoke to the children of Israel about Bezaleel, he was highlighting the importance of this individual chosen by the LORD. Bezaleel was not just any ordinary person; he was called by name by God Himself. This demonstrates the special divine appointment and purpose that Bezaleel had in the tribe of Judah. Bezaleel was the son of Uri, from the lineage of Hur, and his lineage showed a connection to people of influence and significance within the community. By singling out Bezaleel, Moses was emphasizing the unique skills, talents, and qualities that God had bestowed upon him to contribute to the work that needed to be done. The LORD's specific calling of Bezaleel shows that God chooses individuals for specific tasks and assignments, and this verse serves as a reminder to the children of Israel that God's plans and purposes are carried out through those whom He has called by name.

Theological Overview

When looking at the theological interpretation of this verse in Exodus 35:30, one can see the importance of God's specific calling and equipping of individuals for a particular purpose. Bezaleel was chosen by the Lord to be the chief artisan for the construction of the tabernacle in the wilderness. This verse highlights God's sovereignty in selecting individuals and giving them the necessary skills and abilities to carry out His plans. It also emphasizes the idea that God calls each of us by name, knowing us intimately and entrusting us with specific tasks.

Furthermore, a word study of the name Bezaleel reveals its meaning in Hebrew, which is "in the shadow of God” or “under the protection of God.” This sheds light on Bezaleel's close relationship with God and the divine guidance he received in his work. The mention of Bezaleel's lineage from the tribe of Judah also holds significance, as Judah was a prominent tribe associated with leadership and royalty in the Old Testament. This further emphasizes God's intentional selection of Bezaleel for this important task.
