Book of Exodus - Chapter 34 - Verse 34

34:34
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.

Meaning

When Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, it was a symbolic act of entering the divine presence. The act of taking off the veil before speaking with the LORD signifies a removal of barriers and obstacles between man and God. The veil symbolizes the separation and distance between humanity and the divine. By removing the veil, Moses was able to commune directly with God without any hindrance. This act highlights the intimacy and closeness between Moses and the LORD, as well as the importance of clear communication in receiving and delivering God's commands. When Moses came out from speaking with the LORD, he relayed the commands and instructions to the children of Israel. This passage emphasizes the role of Moses as the intermediary between God and His people, as well as the responsibility of faithfully conveying God's words to the community. It also demonstrates the significance of obedience and adherence to divine commands as spoken through the chosen messenger.

Theological Overview

When Moses went into the presence of the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil that covered his face. This act of unveiling symbolized the transparency and openness with which Moses communicated with God. The removal of the veil signified a direct and intimate connection between Moses and the divine. It also served to show that Moses was willing to lay bare his thoughts, feelings, and requests before the Lord without any barriers or hindrances. This gesture highlights the importance of approaching God with honesty, humility, and reverence, allowing Him to see into the depths of our hearts without any pretense or concealment.

After speaking with the Lord, Moses would then come out from His presence and communicate the messages and commands he had received to the children of Israel. This process of veiling and unveiling symbolizes the sacred duty and responsibility of transmitting God's word to His people. By conveying the divine instructions without distortion or alteration, Moses served as a faithful mediator between God and the Israelites. His actions remind us of the importance of faithfully delivering God's messages to His followers, ensuring that His words are shared accurately and with integrity.
