Book of Exodus - Chapter 34 - Verse 1

34:1
And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Exodus, God is instructing Moses to create two new stone tablets to replace the ones he had previously broken. The tablets that Moses had shattered were inscribed with the Ten Commandments, which were given to him directly by God. God promises to rewrite the commandments on the new tablets so that the people would continue to have access to them. The breaking of the original tablets symbolizes the breaking of the covenant between God and the Israelites due to their disobedience and worship of the golden calf. By ordering Moses to create new tablets and promising to rewrite the commandments, God is offering the Israelites a second chance and reaffirming his commitment to them. This verse highlights the themes of forgiveness, restoration, and God’s faithfulness to his people even in the face of their mistakes and shortcomings.

Theological Overview

In this verse, God instructs Moses to carve two new stone tablets like the ones he had broken earlier. The theological interpretation of this command is significant as it symbolizes God's enduring mercy and forgiveness towards His people. Despite the Israelites' disobedience and idolatry which led Moses to break the first set of tablets, God promises to rewrite the words of the covenant on the new tablets. This act highlights God's faithfulness to His covenant promises and His desire to restore His relationship with His people. The word "hew" in this verse also carries a deeper meaning, signifying the process of shaping and transforming the hearts of the Israelites to be aligned with God's will. This act of carving the tablets serves as a visual representation of God's desire to renew and restore His people, while also emphasizing the importance of obedience and fidelity to His commandments.
