Book of Exodus - Chapter 27 - Verse 7

27:7
And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it.

Meaning

In this verse, the altar is described as having rings and staves that are used for transporting it. The rings are attached to the sides of the altar, while the staves are placed through the rings so that the altar can be carried by priests. This practice of using staves and rings to transport the altar was a common method employed during ancient times. The staves allowed for a secure and stable grip, making it easier for the priests to carry the heavy altar when moving it from one location to another. The altar held great significance in religious ceremonies and rituals, so it was essential that it be transported with care and reverence. The instructions given in this verse served as a practical guideline for the priests on how to handle and transport the altar in a proper and respectful manner.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Exodus, we see a detailed description of how the altar in the tabernacle is to be transported. The use of the word "staves" refers to poles or rods that are to be placed through rings on the sides of the altar. These staves are then to be used to carry the altar when it needs to be moved. This practical instruction not only speaks to the physical logistics of transporting the altar but also carries a symbolic meaning. The act of the staves bearing the weight of the altar can be interpreted as symbolizing the responsibility and duty of the priests in ensuring the altar is always ready for worship and sacrifices. It serves as a reminder of the sacredness and importance of the altar in the worship of God. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the reverence the Israelites were to have for the tabernacle and all its components, emphasizing the need for diligence and care in their service to God.
