Book of Exodus - Chapter 27 - Verse 2

27:2
And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.

Meaning

In this verse, the instructions are given for the construction of the altar of burnt offering. The horns mentioned here are projections at each corner of the altar, symbolizing strength and power. The significance of the horns lies in their representation of protection and safety, as they were used historically as a place of refuge for individuals seeking asylum from their enemies. The horns' equal height also symbolizes the equality and fairness of God's justice. Additionally, the brass overlay signifies durability and resilience, highlighting the importance of the altar as a central element in the worship of God. By carefully following these instructions, the Israelites demonstrated their commitment to worship and sacrifice as a means of connecting with the divine. The attention to detail in the construction of the altar reflects the importance of reverence and obedience in the practice of faith.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Exodus, the term "horns" refers to the protrusions found at each corner of the altar. These horns were used in the sacrificial rituals as a place where the blood of the offering would be applied. The fact that the horns were to be made of the same material as the altar itself, and overlaid with brass, carries significance in terms of unity and strength. The use of brass for the overlay represents strength and endurance, as brass is a durable metal with a rich history of use in sacred objects. This verse underscores the importance of the altar in the act of worship and sacrifice, as it is where the connection between the divine and the mortal is made tangible. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the significance of the altar as a sacred place where offerings are made in reverence and obedience to God.
