Book of Exodus - Chapter 21 - Verse 9

21:9
And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

Meaning

In this verse, the phrase "he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters" indicates the responsibility that a father has towards his daughter-in-law, especially if he has betrothed her to his son. In ancient cultures, including the biblical context, the role of a father-in-law was crucial in ensuring the well-being and protection of his son's wife. By treating her as he would his own daughter, the father-in-law is expected to provide care, support, and guidance to the young woman who is now a part of his family. This verse highlights the importance of familial relationships and the duty to treat one another with respect and love, regardless of whether someone is a blood relative or an in-law. It serves as a reminder of the significance of honoring and caring for all members of the family, particularly in the context of marriage and betrothal.
