Book of Exodus - Chapter 17 - Verse 6

17:6
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Exodus describes a miraculous event in which God instructs Moses to strike a rock at Horeb, resulting in water gushing out for the Israelites to drink. This event is significant as it demonstrates God's provision and care for his people, even in the midst of a dry and desperate situation. The rock being struck by Moses is often seen as a symbol of Christ in the New Testament, who is believed to be the living water that quenches the spiritual thirst of believers. The water coming out of the rock can also be interpreted as a foreshadowing of the Holy Spirit pouring out on believers in the New Testament. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness and ability to meet the needs of his people, even in seemingly impossible circumstances. As Moses obeyed God's command in the sight of the elders of Israel, it is a reminder for believers to trust in God's promises and follow his leading, even when it may seem unconventional or challenging.

Theological Overview

One of the key theological interpretations of this verse is the symbolism of the rock in Horeb. Throughout the Bible, the rock is often used as a symbol of God's strength, stability, and provision. In this particular instance, God instructs Moses to strike the rock, and when he does, water flows out of it to quench the thirst of the Israelites. This miracle not only demonstrates God's power to provide for His people in times of need but also foreshadows the ultimate provision of salvation through Christ. The act of striking the rock can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ being struck on the cross, from which flows the living water of salvation for all who believe. Additionally, the fact that Moses performed this miracle in the sight of the elders of Israel serves as a reminder of the importance of leadership and faithfulness in carrying out God's commands.
