Book of Exodus - Chapter 17 - Verse 2

17:2
Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Exodus, the people of Israel are once again complaining to Moses about the lack of water. This was a common theme throughout their journey in the wilderness, as they often struggled with trust and faith in God's provision. By chiding with Moses, the people were essentially questioning his leadership and doubting his ability to provide for them. Moses, in turn, directs their attention to the deeper issue at hand - their lack of faith in God. He asks them why they are testing and tempting the Lord with their constant complaints and demands. This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God's plan and timing, even when we are faced with difficult circumstances or uncertainties. It teaches us the importance of patience, faith, and humility in our relationship with God.

Theological Overview

This verse, found in the book of Exodus, depicts the Israelites' lack of faith and trust in God as they journey through the wilderness under the guidance of Moses. The people grumble and complain to Moses, demanding water to quench their thirst. In response, Moses questions their behavior, asking why they are quarreling with him and testing the Lord. This interaction highlights the tension between the Israelites' dependency on God for their needs and their tendency to doubt His provision. The word "chide" in this context implies more than just a simple disagreement; it conveys a sense of contention and complaint. By questioning Moses and demanding immediate fulfillment of their desires, the Israelites reveal their impatience and lack of faith in God's timing and ability to provide for them. Moses' reaction reflects his frustration with the people's constant complaints and serves as a reminder of the importance of trusting in God's plan and timing, even in times of scarcity and uncertainty.
