Book of Exodus - Chapter 16 - Verse 8

16:8
And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Exodus, spoken by Moses, highlights the concept of faith and trust in the provision of the Lord. The Israelites had been murmuring and complaining about their lack of food in the wilderness, showing a lack of faith in God's ability to provide for them. In response, Moses reassures them that the Lord has heard their complaints and will provide them with meat in the evening and bread in the morning. He emphasizes that their complaints are not against him or the other leaders, but against the Lord himself. This serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to readers today, that ultimately our trust and complaints should be directed towards God, who is the ultimate provider. It also serves as a lesson in faith and gratitude, reminding us to trust in God's provision and be thankful for what we have, rather than focusing on what we lack.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Exodus, Moses is addressing the Israelites who were grumbling about the lack of food in the wilderness. The theological interpretation of this passage highlights the concept of God's provision for His people. The mention of flesh in the evening and bread in the morning signifies God's faithfulness in meeting the needs of His people. The verse also emphasizes the importance of trusting in God's timing and provision, as He is aware of our needs even before we voice them. Additionally, the mention of murmuring against the Lord serves as a cautionary reminder to the Israelites (and to us) about the consequences of complaining and doubting God's goodness and faithfulness. Through this passage, we are reminded to approach God with gratitude and trust, knowing that He hears our prayers and provides for us according to His divine plan.
