Book of Exodus - Chapter 12 - Verse 7

12:7
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Meaning

This verse comes from the Book of Exodus, specifically in the context of the Passover story. In this passage, God instructs the Israelites to take the blood of a sacrificial lamb and use it to mark the doorposts of their homes. This act served as a sign of faith and obedience to God's command, as well as a form of protection. The blood on the doorposts symbolized the Israelites' trust in God's promise to pass over their homes and spare them from the final plague that would strike the Egyptians. The blood was a visible reminder of the covenant between God and His people, marking them as His chosen ones. By following this command, the Israelites were demonstrating their willingness to follow God's instructions and their belief in His power to deliver them from harm. This act of faith and obedience played a crucial role in the events leading up to the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt.

Theological Overview

When interpreting the verse where the blood is to be struck on the two side posts and upper door post of the houses, it is important to understand the theological significance behind this act. This ritual of marking the doorposts with blood was part of the Passover celebration in ancient Israel. The blood was a symbol of protection and salvation, as it was a sign for the Angel of Death to pass over the homes of the Israelites while carrying out the final plague on Egypt. This act of obedience by the Israelites demonstrated their faith in God's promise of deliverance and protection. Additionally, the blood also foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would shed his blood to provide salvation and deliverance for all who believe in him.

American Standard Version

And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it.
