Book of Exodus - Chapter 12 - Verse 19

12:19
Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.

Meaning

In this verse, the presence of leaven is forbidden in the houses of Israel for seven days. Leaven is a substance that causes bread to rise and ferment. Symbolically, it is often associated with impurity, corruption, or sin. By removing leaven from their homes during this time, the Israelites were demonstrating their commitment to holiness and purity. The consequence for consuming leavened bread during this period was to be cut off from the congregation of Israel. This severe punishment served as a deterrent and emphasized the importance of obeying God's commandments. Whether one was a stranger or a native-born Israelite, the same rule applied. This verse highlights the seriousness with which the Israelites were expected to follow God's laws and maintain their spiritual integrity.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Exodus 12:19, the theological interpretation revolves around the significance of leaven in the Bible. Leaven, or yeast, is often used symbolically to represent sin and corruption. In this context, the removal of leaven from the Israelites' houses for seven days during the Feast of Unleavened Bread serves as a physical and spiritual cleansing. The act of abstaining from leaven was a way for the Israelites to demonstrate their obedience to God and their commitment to living a life free from sin. The consequences of eating leavened bread were severe, as the individual would be cut off from the congregation of Israel, highlighting the seriousness of following God's commands.

American Standard Version
