Book of Exodus - Chapter 1 - Verse 19

1:19
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

Meaning

When the midwives in the book of Exodus told Pharaoh that the Hebrew women were not like the Egyptian women, they were essentially making an excuse for why they were unable to follow Pharaoh's orders to kill all male Hebrew babies. The midwives were trying to justify their actions by claiming that the Hebrew women gave birth before they could even arrive to assist in the delivery. This response was a clever way to avoid carrying out Pharaoh's cruel decree while also highlighting the strength and resilience of the Hebrew women. By emphasizing the vitality and quickness of the Hebrew women, the midwives were able to protect the lives of the innocent babies and ensure that they were not killed at birth. This verse serves as a reminder of the bravery and resourcefulness of those who stand up against injustice, even in the face of great danger.
