Book of Esther - Chapter 3 - Verse 15

3:15
The posts went out, being hastened by the king's commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.

Meaning

After receiving the king's urgent command, the posts were sent out quickly throughout the city of Shushan to deliver a decree. Meanwhile, King Ahasuerus and his trusted advisor, Haman, decided to sit down and enjoy some drinks. However, the city of Shushan was in a state of confusion and bewilderment. This verse from the Book of Esther highlights the stark contrast between the carefree attitude of the king and Haman and the turmoil and uncertainty felt by the people of Shushan. The hasty issuance of the decree and the nonchalant behavior of the king and Haman set the stage for the events that unfold in the rest of the story.

Theological Overview

Looking at the theological interpretation of this verse, we see that it brings to light the themes of power, confusion, and divine intervention. The speed with which the king's commandment was carried out emphasizes his authority and the obedience of his subjects. The contrast between the king and Haman enjoying themselves while the city of Shushan is in confusion reflects how those in power may be indifferent to the struggles of the common people. This scene sets the stage for the unfolding of events that will ultimately lead to the downfall of Haman and the protection of the Jewish people through the providence of God. The word "perplexed" in this verse suggests a state of turmoil and uncertainty among the people, highlighting the consequences of the king's decree.
