Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 31 - Verse 7

31:7
And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

Meaning

When Moses called unto Joshua and instructed him to be strong and of good courage in front of all Israel, he was passing on the mantle of leadership to Joshua. Moses knew that he would not be able to lead the Israelites into the promised land and that it would be up to Joshua to fulfill God's promise to their ancestors. By reminding Joshua of the importance of his role and the need for strength and courage, Moses was preparing him for the challenges ahead. Joshua was being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Israelites and ensuring that they inherited the land that God had promised to give them. This verse serves as a moment of transition in the leadership of the Israelites, as Joshua prepares to take on the role of guiding his people into their new home.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Moses is passing on the leadership of the Israelites to Joshua, instructing him to be strong and courageous as he leads the people into the land that God had promised to their ancestors. The phrase "be strong and of a good courage" emphasizes the importance of Joshua's character and his need for spiritual strength to face the challenges ahead. The word "courage" in Hebrew, often translated as "strength" or "boldness," implies not only physical strength but also moral and mental fortitude. Through this command, Moses is preparing Joshua for the responsibility of guiding the Israelites and ensuring that they receive the land that God had promised to them. By placing this charge in front of all of Israel, Moses is emphasizing the public nature of Joshua's appointment and his endorsement as the new leader. This transition of power symbolizes continuity and divine guidance in the Israelites' journey towards the fulfillment of God's promises.
