Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 3 - Verse 18

3:18
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

Meaning

During this moment in history, the Israelites were on the brink of entering the promised land. God had promised to give them this land as an inheritance, and they were commanded to possess it by passing over armed before their brethren. This directive was given to ensure that the Israelites were prepared for any opposition they may face as they took possession of the land. The instruction to pass over armed also served as a reminder that they must rely on God for protection and victory in battle. The phrase "all that are meet for the war" emphasizes the importance of readiness for battle among the Israelites, as they were about to face various challenges in their conquest of the promised land. This verse serves as a call to action for the Israelites, reminding them of God's promise and their responsibility to take hold of the land that had been set aside for them.

Theological Overview

When analyzing the theological interpretation of Deuteronomy 3:18, it is important to note that this verse demonstrates God's promise to the Israelites to grant them possession of the land. The word "possess" here not only refers to taking physical control of the land but also implies establishing God's sovereignty over the territory.
