Meaning

This verse from the book of Deuteronomy outlines the severe consequences of stealing and selling a fellow Israelite into slavery. The punishment for such a crime is death, as it was considered a grave offense against both the individual being stolen and against God. By emphasizing the harsh penalty for this act, the verse serves as a reminder of the importance of treating others with respect and dignity. It also highlights the value that the Israelites placed on community and unity among their people. The verse aims to discourage such behavior and to promote a society where individuals are valued and protected. In a broader sense, the verse can be seen as a call to uphold justice and fairness in all interactions with others, reflecting the moral and ethical values present in the Bible.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse focuses on the intrinsic value of human life. In ancient Israel, stealing a fellow Israelite and selling them into slavery was a heinous crime that devalued the individual and undermined the community. This law underscores the importance of human dignity and respect for one another as members of the same covenant people. It also serves as a reminder of God's command to love our neighbor as ourselves. The severe punishment prescribed in this verse demonstrates the seriousness with which God views the mistreatment of His people and emphasizes the need to uphold justice and righteousness in all relationships. Furthermore, by putting evil away from among them, the Israelites were instructed to maintain a society where every person is treated with fairness and compassion, reflecting the divine image in which they were all created.

American Standard Version
