Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 18 - Verse 14

18:14
For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is instructing the Israelites about the importance of being faithful to the Lord their God. The nations surrounding them had turned to observers of times and diviners for guidance and answers, seeking to predict the future through astrology and other occult practices. However, the Israelites were not to follow in their footsteps, as the Lord had set them apart and commanded them to trust in Him alone. By relying on God for guidance and direction, the Israelites would demonstrate their faith and obedience to Him. This verse serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to us today, that true wisdom and guidance come from the Lord, and we are called to seek Him above all else.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, the use of terms like "observers of times" and "diviners" sheds light on the spiritual practices prevalent among the nations the Israelites were about to conquer. The term "observers of times" likely refers to those who practiced various forms of astrology, looking to the stars for guidance and making decisions based on their perceived influence. On the other hand, "diviners" could encompass a range of practices such as seeking guidance from spirits or using objects to foretell the future. By contrast, the Israelites are instructed not to follow such practices but to rely on the Lord their God for guidance and direction. This underscores the belief in the singular authority and power of God over all other spiritual entities. It serves as a reminder of the importance of staying faithful and obedient to God's commandments, rather than seeking guidance from sources that do not align with His will.

American Standard Version

For these nations, that thou shalt dispossess, hearken unto them that practise augury, and unto diviners; but as for thee, Jehovah thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
