Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 10 - Verse 3

10:3
And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand.

Meaning

In this verse, Moses is describing the construction of the Ark of the Covenant, a sacred container in which the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments were kept. The ark was made of shittim wood, a valuable and durable material suitable for this significant purpose. The two stone tablets were carved by Moses himself, identical to the ones that God had originally given to him on Mount Sinai. By creating a replica of the tablets, Moses ensured that the Ten Commandments would be preserved and revered for future generations. As Moses ascended the mountain with the tablets in hand, he was embarking on a journey that would further solidify the covenant between God and the Israelites. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding divine laws and honoring sacred traditions.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse points to the significance of the ark as a symbol of God's covenant with His people. The ark was a sacred container that housed the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments, signifying the presence and guidance of God among the Israelites. The use of shittim wood, which is known for its durability and incorruptibility, reinforces the idea of God's enduring faithfulness and the importance of preserving His teachings. Furthermore, the act of going up into the mount with the stone tablets in hand symbolizes Moses' intimate encounter with God, receiving divine wisdom and instructions to guide the community.
