Book of Daniel - Chapter 7 - Verse 8

7:8
I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Meaning

This verse is from the Book of Daniel, in which Daniel has a vision of four beasts emerging from the sea, representing four kingdoms that will rise to power. The little horn that comes up among the other horns is widely interpreted as a symbol of a powerful ruler who will usurp three other rulers to establish his dominance. The eyes like the eyes of man and the mouth speaking great things suggest that this individual will possess great intelligence and speak boastfully. Many believe that this passage foreshadows the rise of a tyrannical leader in the future, who will seek to assert authority over others through deceit and manipulation. The imagery in this verse is rich with symbolism, highlighting the rise and fall of powerful leaders throughout history.

Theological Overview

In the book of Daniel, the interpretation of the vision of the horns is a key part of understanding the prophetic nature of the passage. The little horn that arises among the ten horns represents a powerful and boastful kingdom that will emerge in the future. The plucking up of three of the first horns by their roots symbolizes the overthrow of other kingdoms by this new, dominant power. The eyes like the eyes of a man and mouth speaking great things signify the intelligence and arrogance of this kingdom's leadership, who will speak proudly and make bold claims. This passage is often interpreted as referring to a future ruler or kingdom that will challenge God's authority and oppress His people. The theological implications of this verse point to the prevalence of pride and rebellion in the world, which ultimately will be judged and overcome by the sovereignty of God.

American Standard Version

I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
