Book of Amos - Chapter 1 - Verse 11

1:11
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

Meaning

This verse from the book of Amos in the Old Testament speaks to God's judgment upon the nation of Edom for their transgressions. The repetition of the phrase "for three transgressions...and for four" signifies that Edom's sins have reached a tipping point, and God will no longer hold back his punishment. The specific transgressions mentioned include pursuing their brother (the nation of Israel) with violence, showing no compassion or pity, harboring anger and wrath continually without seeking reconciliation. Edom's persistent hatred and unwillingness to forgive indicate a deep-rooted animosity that has led to their ultimate downfall. This verse serves as a warning against holding onto grudges and nurturing feelings of vengeance, as it can ultimately separate us from God's mercy and lead to our own destruction.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the consequences of Edom's actions according to the prophet Amos. The repetitive structure of "for three transgressions...and for four" signifies a complete and deliberate defiance of God's commands. Edom's sin of pursuing his brother with the sword, showing no mercy, perpetually harboring anger, and holding onto wrath indefinitely, demonstrates a lack of compassion and a desire for vengeance. The Lord's pronouncement of punishment reflects His righteous judgment on Edom's unrelenting sinful behavior. This verse serves as a warning against the dangers of holding onto anger and refusing to forgive, as such actions ultimately lead to destruction and divine retribution. It underscores the importance of showing mercy and grace towards others, as God's justice will ultimately prevail over those who persist in wickedness.
