Book of Acts - Chapter 22 - Verse 17

22:17
And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

Meaning

When Paul returned to Jerusalem, he went to the temple to pray. While he was praying, he entered into a trance. Trances in the Bible are often associated with moments of deep spiritual insight or divine revelation. In this particular instance, Paul's trance may have been a signal from God that he was about to receive an important message or instruction. The trance could have served as a way for God to communicate directly with Paul, guiding him in his mission and ministry.

Trances are not something that commonly occurs in everyday life, but in the Bible, they are often depicted as a powerful and mystical experience. It is important to note that trances should not be sought after or pursued, but rather humbly accepted if and when they occur. In the context of this verse, Paul's trance while praying in the temple underscores the significance of the moment and the importance of being open to receiving spiritual revelations. It serves as a reminder that God can speak to us in unexpected ways and that we should be ready to listen and follow His guidance.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse "And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance," we can consider the significance of the word "trance" in this context. The word "trance" in this verse comes from the Greek word "ἐν ἐκστάσει," which can also be translated as "ecstasy" or "being outside oneself." This suggests that Paul's experience in the temple was a profound spiritual encounter where he was able to transcend his physical self and enter into a state of deep connection with God. This interpretation highlights the idea that prayer can lead to moments of divine revelation and insight, where the boundaries between the earthly and the heavenly realms are blurred. Paul's experience in the temple serves as a reminder of the power of prayer to open up channels of communication with the divine and to bring about transformative spiritual experiences.
