Book of Acts - Chapter 21 - Verse 20

21:20
And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Acts, the believers who heard the testimony of Paul and his companions were filled with awe and praised the Lord. They recognized the incredible work that God was doing among them, as evidenced by the thousands of Jewish believers who had come to faith in Jesus Christ. Despite their zealous observance of the law, these believers had embraced the message of salvation through Jesus and were fervently following Him. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of the gospel and the importance of spreading the message of Christ to all nations, regardless of their background or beliefs. It also highlights the unity that can be found in Christ, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and traditions to worship and serve the Lord together.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse in Acts 21:20 centers around the tension between the Jewish believers who were zealous for the law and the Gentile believers who were not bound by the same laws. The early church faced challenges in reconciling the cultural and religious differences between these two groups. The Jewish believers, who had a background of adherence to the Mosaic Law, struggled with the idea of full acceptance of the Gentiles without them having to follow the same practices. This verse highlights the fact that many Jewish believers were devoted to the law, but it also sets the stage for the discussion on how the gospel transcends cultural and religious barriers. The word "zealous" in this context signifies a fervent dedication to the traditions and practices of Judaism, which the Jewish believers were passionate about. This verse provides insight into the complexities of navigating faith and cultural norms within the early Christian community.
