Book of Acts - Chapter 20 - Verse 30

20:30
Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Meaning

Within the context of the passage, this verse serves as a warning from the Apostle Paul to the church elders in Ephesus. Paul is cautioning them about the potential dangers that may arise from within their own leadership. He is advising them that some individuals may come forth from within their own ranks, speaking deceitful and distorted teachings in order to attract followers and form their own factions. These false teachers may seek to promote their own agendas and draw disciples away from the true teachings of the faith. Paul is emphasizing the importance of discernment and vigilance within the church community, urging the elders to be on guard against those who may distort the truth for their own gain. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to be wary of those who may try to lead them astray and to hold fast to the true teachings of the gospel.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the phrase "speaking perverse things" is significant in the theological interpretation. The term "perverse" in this context means to distort or twist the truth. It implies that these individuals will not only speak falsehoods but will do so in a way that distorts the original message of the Gospel. This emphasizes the importance of being vigilant and discerning when it comes to spiritual leaders and teachers, as some may lead astray with deceptive teachings. The warning here is to be cautious of those who may appear to be part of the Christian community but are actually promoting false doctrines. The goal of these individuals is to draw away disciples after themselves, diverting attention from the true teachings of Jesus Christ. Therefore, believers are encouraged to study the Word of God diligently and be anchored in sound doctrine to avoid being swayed by those who speak deceitful and misleading things.
