Book of Acts - Chapter 18 - Verse 3

18:3
And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

Meaning

This verse from Acts 18:3 reveals the Apostle Paul's approach to ministry and work. Paul, being a tentmaker by profession, chose to support himself financially rather than relying on the churches he visited for financial support. By being of the same craft as those with whom he was staying in Corinth, Paul was able to connect with them on a practical level. He stayed with them and worked alongside them, showing humility and willingness to be a part of their community. This verse highlights the fact that Paul was not afraid of hard work, and he used his trade as a tentmaker to build relationships and share the Gospel with those around him. It serves as a reminder that ministry can take place in various forms and contexts, and that our work can be a powerful tool for building bridges and sharing the love of Christ with others.

Theological Overview

One interesting theological interpretation of the verse "And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers" is the emphasis on the value of hard work and humility. The apostle Paul, who is being referred to in this verse, is shown as engaging in manual labor alongside his companions, Aquila and Priscilla, who were tentmakers. This demonstrates Paul's willingness to humble himself and work with his hands to support himself, rather than relying solely on financial support from others. This example serves as a reminder to believers that all work, no matter how menial, can be done to the glory of God. It also highlights the importance of not being too proud to engage in manual labor, as even the apostle Paul, one of the key figures in early Christianity, was willing to do so. This verse is a powerful reminder of the value of hard work and the importance of humility in the Christian life.
