Book of Acts - Chapter 12 - Verse 15

12:15
And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Acts chapter 12, verse 15, references a moment where a group of people dismissingly called a woman mad for her belief that Peter, who was imprisoned at the time, was standing at the door. The woman, however, persisted in affirming that it was indeed Peter. This demonstrates the power of faith and how sometimes, what seems impossible to others is entirely possible to those who believe. The people around her eventually changed their disbelief to a belief that it was Peter's angel instead. This verse serves as a reminder that even when others doubt us or our beliefs, we should stay steadfast in our convictions, trusting in the unseen and having faith that miracles can happen. It encourages us to hold onto hope and trust in God's plan, even when situations seem dire or unlikely.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a theological interpretation that can be derived from the phrase, "It is his angel." Some scholars believe that the individuals speaking may have been referring to the concept of a guardian angel. In Jewish tradition, it was believed that each person had a guardian angel who watched over them and interceded on their behalf with God. By stating that it is his angel, they may have been alluding to the idea that Peter's guardian angel was speaking on his behalf to the group gathered at Mary's house. This interpretation adds a layer of spiritual significance to the verse, emphasizing the belief in a divine presence that protects and guides individuals in times of need.

American Standard Version
