Meaning

When God declares in this verse that He will be a father to his people and they will be His sons, it signifies a close, intimate relationship between God and His chosen ones. This relationship is based on love, care, and guidance, much like a parent and child dynamic. However, the verse also highlights the importance of obedience and righteousness. If His people commit iniquity, God will discipline them with the rod of men and the stripes of the children of men. This punishment serves as a reminder that God expects His children to live in accordance with His commandments and to turn away from sin. It also demonstrates God's righteous judgment and desire for His people to walk in His ways. Ultimately, this verse conveys the message that God's love and discipline go hand in hand, showcasing His role as a loving yet just Father to those who follow Him.

The phrase "I will be his father, and he shall be my son" is understood by some scholars as God's promise to always have a close and caring relationship with David's line of kings. The mention of iniquity and chastening with the rod of men and stripes of the children of men speaks to the consequences of disobedience and sin.
