Book of 2 Samuel - Chapter 4 - Verse 5

4:5
And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon.

Meaning

This verse tells the story of Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, who went to the house of Ishbosheth in the middle of the day while he was resting. The fact that they visited Ishbosheth during the heat of the day suggests that this was an unusual time for visitors to come, especially considering that people typically rested during the hottest part of the day. It also indicates that Rechab and Baanah may have had ulterior motives for their visit. The presence of Ishbosheth lying on a bed at noon further emphasizes the vulnerability of the situation. This verse sets the stage for the treacherous act that Rechab and Baanah will commit against Ishbosheth, as they assassinate him while he is in a weakened state. This event ultimately leads to Ishbosheth's demise and the continued turmoil within the kingdom.
