Book of 2 Samuel - Chapter 10 - Verse 16

10:16
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

Meaning

In this verse, Hadarezer, the king of the Aramean city of Zobah, sends his army to engage in battle against King David of Israel. The Syrians beyond the river, likely referring to the Euphrates River, were allies of Hadarezer and joined forces with him as they marched towards the battlefield at Helam. Shobach, the commander of Hadarezer's army, led the Syrian troops into battle against David's forces. This event marked a significant conflict in the ongoing rivalry between the kingdoms of Israel and Aram. The outcome of this battle would have far-reaching consequences for both nations and their respective leaders. As readers continue through the book of Samuel, they will witness the unfolding of this military campaign and the impact it had on the course of history for these ancient kingdoms.
