Book of 2 Peter - Chapter 3 - Verse 7

3:7
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Meaning

The verse highlights the idea that the heavens and the earth are subject to the power and will of God, as they were created by His word. It emphasizes that they are being kept in store, awaiting a future event - the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. This suggests that there will come a time when those who have rejected God will face consequences for their actions. The reference to fire symbolizes a purifying or destructive force that will be unleashed upon the ungodly. This verse serves as a reminder of the ultimate power and authority of God, who will ultimately judge all individuals based on their actions and beliefs. It conveys a sense of urgency for individuals to turn away from ungodly behavior and seek righteousness to avoid facing judgment. It also serves as a warning to those who continue in ungodliness that they will ultimately face the consequences of their choices.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the phrase "kept in store" conveys the idea of preservation and protection. The heavens and the earth are being preserved by the word of God until the appointed time when they will be destroyed by fire. This emphasizes the power and sovereignty of God over all creation. The phrase "reserved unto fire" suggests that the ultimate fate of the universe is destruction, as it will be consumed by fire in the day of judgment. This highlights the idea of God's justice and judgment upon the ungodly. The mention of "ungodly men" points to those who reject God's authority and live in disobedience to His commands. They will face perdition, which is complete and utter destruction. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of unbelief and disobedience, as well as the inevitable judgment that awaits those who reject God's word.
