Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 9 - Verse 8

9:8
For the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel:

Meaning

This verse from the Bible, specifically from the book of 1 Kings 21:21, signifies a pronouncement of judgment upon the house of Ahab by the prophet Elijah. In biblical times, family lines held great significance, representing power, influence, and legacy. The phrase "him that pisseth against the wall" was a common expression in ancient Hebrew culture to denote males in a household. Thus, the proclamation that "him that pisseth against the wall" would be cut off from Ahab's line symbolizes the complete eradication of his descendants. Additionally, the mention of "him that is shut up and left in Israel" refers to anyone who remains within the nation, further emphasizing the totality of the punishment. This verse serves as a warning of the consequences of Ahab's wickedness and the righteous judgment that will befall his entire family.

Theological Overview

In this verse from 2 Kings 9:8, the phrase "pisseth against the wall" is a Hebrew idiom that refers to men, as opposed to women or children. This idiom is used to differentiate between males and females in ancient times, as men usually stood up while urinating. Additionally, the phrase "him that is shut up and left in Israel" likely refers to individuals who are confined or left behind when the judgment comes upon the house of Ahab. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the severe judgment that God pronounces upon the entire house of Ahab, including all its members and even those who are isolated or left behind. This verse serves as a reminder of God's justice and the consequences of disobedience, showing that no one in the house of Ahab will escape the judgment that is to come.

American Standard Version

For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel.
