Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 8 - Verse 27

8:27
And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of Ahab: for he was the son in law of the house of Ahab.

Meaning

This verse, found in 2 Kings 8:27, describes how Jehoram, the son of King Jehoshaphat, acted similarly to the evil ways of the house of Ahab. By marrying Athaliah, the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, Jehoram aligned himself with a family that had a history of turning away from God and leading the nation of Israel into idolatry. The reference to "the way of the house of Ahab" symbolizes a pattern of disobedience and wickedness in the eyes of the Lord. Just as Ahab and his descendants had done, Jehoram continued in this sinful path, ultimately leading to the downfall of his kingdom. This verse serves as a warning against following in the footsteps of those who have turned away from God and serves as a reminder of the consequences of straying from the righteous path set forth by the Lord.

Theological Overview

From a theological interpretation, this verse highlights the concept of influence and how relationships can impact one's behavior. The phrase "walked in the way of the house of Ahab" signifies that the individual in question, Jehoram, followed the sinful practices of his in-laws, the house of Ahab. This reflects the idea that the company we keep and the alliances we form can shape our actions and beliefs. By aligning himself with a corrupt and ungodly family, Jehoram ultimately followed in their footsteps and committed evil in the sight of the LORD. The mention of him being the son-in-law of the house of Ahab underscores the close connection and influence that family ties can have on one's spiritual journey. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of surrounding oneself with righteous influences and avoiding associations that may lead us astray from the path of righteousness.

American Standard Version
