Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 6 - Verse 17

6:17
And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Meaning

This verse from the book of 2 Kings in the Bible tells the story of Elisha, a prophet of God, and his servant. The young man was filled with fear as he saw the enemy's army surrounding them. In response to the servant's fear, Elisha prayed to God to open the servant's eyes so he could see the spiritual realm. When God answered Elisha's prayer, the young man was able to see the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha, representing the divine protection and power of God. This story serves as a powerful reminder that we are not alone in our battles. Just as Elisha and his servant had supernatural protection from God, we too can trust in God's presence and power to see us through difficult situations. It encourages us to have faith and trust in God's provision, even when we cannot see it with our physical eyes.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the prophet Elisha prays to the Lord to open the eyes of his servant so that he may see the spiritual reality that surrounds them. The young man's eyes are then opened, and he sees a vision of the mountain filled with horses and chariots of fire, representing the angelic forces of God protecting Elisha. This passage highlights the importance of spiritual sight and awareness in the life of a believer. It teaches us that there is often more to reality than meets the eye, and that God's presence and protection are always at work, even when we may not see it. Elisha's prayer for his servant's eyes to be opened can also serve as a reminder for us to pray for spiritual insight and discernment in our own lives. Through this verse, we are encouraged to trust in God's unseen help and to seek to see the world through eyes of faith.
