Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 20 - Verse 17

20:17
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

Meaning

Jeremiah 20:5 highlights a prophecy from the Lord warning of the impending invasion of Babylon and the subsequent looting of Jerusalem. The verse serves as a stern reminder to the people of Judah of the consequences of their disobedience towards God. The "all that is in thine house" refers to their possessions, riches, and treasures, while "that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day" signifies the generational wealth accumulated over time. The statement emphasizes the severity of the impending Babylonian exile, where everything of value will be taken away, leaving nothing behind. This verse underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God and following his commandments to avoid facing such dire consequences. It serves as a forewarning to the people to repent and turn back to the Lord before it is too late.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of 2 Kings, the prophet Isaiah delivers a message from the Lord regarding the impending destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. The word "Behold" indicates a sense of urgency and importance, urging the people to pay attention to what is about to happen. The phrase "all that is in thine house" refers to the wealth and possessions of the people of Jerusalem, which will be taken captive and carried off to Babylon as plunder. This event is seen as a consequence of the disobedience and idolatry of the people, as warned by the prophets. The mention of "that which thy fathers have laid up in store" emphasizes the generational nature of sin and its consequences. The Babylonian exile serves as a judgment from God for the sins of the people and a call to repentance. It also foreshadows the eventual restoration and redemption of God's people, as promised in later prophecies.
