Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 2 - Verse 14

2:14
And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Meaning

When Elisha took up the mantle of Elijah and struck the waters saying, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" he was demonstrating his faith and belief in the power and presence of God. The act of smiting the waters and parting them hither and thither was a clear indication of Elisha's identification with Elijah as his successor and the continuation of God's work through him. By calling upon the God of Elijah, Elisha was affirming his trust in God's ability to perform miracles and intervene in supernatural ways. This event marked a significant moment in Elisha's ministry, showcasing his faith, courage, and obedience to God's calling. It also serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness and power to work through those who are willing to follow Him wholeheartedly.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see Elisha taking up the mantle of the prophet Elijah after Elijah's ascension into heaven. The act of smiting the waters and calling out for the God of Elijah demonstrates Elisha's faith and belief in the same God who had worked through Elijah. The splitting of the waters echoes the parting of the Red Sea by Moses, signaling Elisha's authority as a prophet of God. The use of the mantle symbolizes the passing of the prophetic anointing from Elijah to Elisha, showing continuity and succession in the prophetic office. The phrase "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" also serves as a cry for the manifestation of God's power and presence in Elisha's ministry. This verse showcases the divine power at work through Elisha as he steps into his role as a prophet, continuing the work of his mentor, Elijah.
